Das Schlachtfest (butcher fest) translation (3rd quarter story #3)

1.	Josel and Nanni are friends.
2.	Josel became 8 years old, but Nanni did not become older than one.  Nanni should die.
3.	Josel hugs Nanni and says, “I will not leave it to be.”
4.	Nanni wipes his head on Josel’s pullover and grunts
5. 	She was always something special since she was quite small.  She can be as sensitive as a kitten 
and clever as a dog.  Josel brought her the skill pieces.  She jumped over a stick that he held out.  She ran 
around in a circle when he clapped his hands.  Later Josel’s mother forbade jumping and running because 
Nanni will become skinny
6.	She locked Nanni in a shed.  Josel is allowed to bring her food.
7.	When he sat besides  her, Nanni is like other pigs.  Now Nanni is wide and fat.
8. 	He should be butchered.
9. 	I will not leave it to be,” calls Josel, who has tears in his eyes.
10.	On Saturday morning, Fritze Moll came.  He worked in an auto shop.  He learned butchering 
earlier.  He dismantles the meat and seasons the sausage so well like no other.
11.	Fritze rolls the cutting block out of his car trunk, ties the plastic apron on, and sharpens at least ten 
knives.
12.	Josel’s father drags out the big tub.
13.	Josel’s mother heats the kettle for hours, in which the water readily boiled.
14.	The hens scratch impatiently because they wait for the left overs.
15.	Now the father goes to the shed.  He wraps a cord around Nanni’s right foreleg and pulls it out.
16.	“No, no, I will not let it be,” screams Josel.  He hugs Nanni’s neck.  Fritze pulls Nanni from 
behind, father pulls her from the front.  Josel rompers around her.  Then Nanni becomes wild.
17.	She sets herself high like a horse, so that she leaves everyone shocked.  Then she dashes from 
them.
18.	She comes only to the yard.
19.	The father is behind her link lightning and places her a leg (kicks her).  Nanni stumbles and falls.
20.	Josel places himself against the wall and shuts both of his eyes.
21.	He does not want to see.
22.	He does not want to hear.
23.	He would like to be there no more.
24.	Mother takes him aside, presses him money and the basket in one hand and says, “Go and fetch in 
the shop fresh pepper.  But take your time.
25.	Josel takes a lot of time.  He ambles wailing through the village.
26.	He comes home at one after noon.
27.	Father, mother, and Fritze Moll sit at the kitchen table.  They cut fat slices from a piece of cooked 
meat.  It smells.
28.	Josel runs to the bathroom.  He must relieve himself.
29.	Mother places him into bed and brings pepper tea.
30.	In the kitchen, Fritze Moll says to father, “It runs not good, his heart hangs on a pig.  Then he does 
not want to taste the sausage.
31.	In the week afterwards, Josel’s father buys a small pink piglet.  It should become wide and fat by 
next year.
32.	Now it jumps quickly over the yard.  
33.	“Is it not cute?” asks Josel’s mother.
34.	Josel shakes the head.  He does not see it anymore.
